They've turned off Handel's Messiah. At least I think they have. And not a minute too soon. The saga of Ferdinand Marcos has come to an end. Its final chapter began shortly after the 1986 elections, which fraud helped him win and good sense persuaded him to leave the country in lieu of serving another term.
That was the election, it will be recalled, in which Marcos castigated Corazon Aquino for seeking the presidency. In commenting on her candidacy in a campaign speech, he said that Aquino lacked femininity. He said the ideal woman is someone ``gentle, who does not challenge a man, but who keeps her criticisms to herself and teaches her husband only in the bedroom.''
