THIS MONTH, Line 2 of the Tehran metro is due to be extended from Baharestan Square east to Shahid Madani. The rest of this 8.5km extension to Dardasht will be completed later this year. This will conclude the construction of metro lines 1 and 2 under phase 1. Line 5, a 41.5km express metro operated by double-deck electric trains, has also been completed as far as Karaj and Mehrshahr, although additional intermediate stations are still being added.
Traffic on the first three lines reached 210 million journeys in 2004 compared with 199 million in 2003 and 128 million the year before. Last year, traffic had reached 198 million by October, and so should be well ...
