Witnessing the steady growth of organic food and drink has been most encouraging for manufacturers like Alara. MD Alex Smith comments: "While organic food sales are growing at 11% our own sales are up 35% year-on-year reflecting a real commitment by consumers to buy organic. Undoubtedly health is one of the biggest drivers, but ethical issues often associated with organic also play a big part and I believe that manufacturers need to appreciate this; organic shoppers increasingly also look for traceability, environmentally friendly production methods, packaging, and Fairtrade."
