People have come to expect high drama of political events in Palestine or Iraq, but most intrigues are played out behind closed doors in the Gulf. In truth, this is no bad thing. Given the violent history of the Middle East, the residents of Doha or Abu Dhabi can count themselves fortunate to have avoided such turmoil.
But in the absence of hard political news, gossip thrives. Even in comparatively open counties such as Kuwait, the least bit of tittle-tattle is grist to the rumour mill. and conversations can quickly turn into arguments over matters that seem arcane, if not trivial, to an outsider.
