More than a week of high political drama came to an end on 24 January with confirmation that Prime Minister Shaikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah would become Kuwait's new amir. On an unprecedented day in Kuwaiti politics, the cabinet confirmed Shaikh Sabah's nomination after the National Assembly (parliament), in a deft piece of political manoeuvring that stuck to the letter of constitution, unanimously voted out of office Shaikh Saad al-Abdullah al-Sabah, who as crown prince automatically succeeded the late Shaikh Jaber al-Ahmad al Sabah on 15 January
