EL PORTAL, Calif, _ El Capitan is big, very big.
The nearly 3,600-foot-high cliff is an almost vertical wall of granite, one of the major and most striking attractions in Yosemite National Park in the High Sierras of California.
The cliff, on the north side of the glacier-carved valley, rises from California black oaks at its base on the floor of Yosemite Valley to 7,569 feet. It is nearly a mile wide and an imposing presence.
El Capitan is the second tallest unbroken cliff in the world, second only to Mount Thor on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic.
