In 1930, fresh out of high school at the ripe age of 16, James Ralph Coleman was eager to begin the next phase of his life as an undergraduate at the University of Texas at Austin.
The only problem: His interests revolved around architecture, which wasn't exactly a booming industry during the Great Depression.
So the hardworking farmboy from Woodville, Texas, asked for guidance from an uncle, who was finding some success with a rice business.
Get involved with this so-called petroleum field, his uncle said. It could be big.
