At half past nine yesterday morning an EPIRB (emergency position indicating radio beacon) alert was received by Falmouth Coastguard indicating that the vessel that this beacon was registered to was in distress.

The position that the beacon gave placed the signal approximately 640 miles west of the Cape Verde islands.

All 406 mhz EPIRB's are required to be registered, this then gives Falmouth Coastguard the opportunity to identify the owner or owners.
