Feb. 21--One opponent called a proposed no-wake zone on the Mississippi River along downtown La Crosse as an act that would kill boating in the area.
But La Crosse Queen pilot Michael Vogel said wakes caused by big boats at high speeds pound the excursion boat's dock, creating a dangerous situation for crew and passengers.
"What kind of publicity would the city get if someone is hurt boarding one of these vessels?" Vogel asked. "It's a bad situation, and something's eventually going to happen."
