UNDER "Life President" Hastings Kamuzu Banda, Malawi has always done things its own way. But last May even Dr Banda felt obliged to hold a referendum--and found that 63% of voters favored an end to one-party rule. He promised multi-party elections in May next year. His poor health has now pushed forward speculation about a post-Banda Malawi. Since October 2nd Dr Banda has been in hospital in Johannesburg where he was flown for an operation to have fluid drained from his brain. According to hospital administrators, the old man has had to be treated for depression. Dr Banda is thought to be in his mid-90s--though speculation about his age is forbidden in Malawi.
