Two of Christopher Brooke's interests throughout his scholarly career have been medieval cities and the medieval church. The articles in this collection address both of these concerns, for each of them involves some aspect of the relation between church and city in the Middle Ages. Miri Rubin argues, on the basis of recent studies of urban and rural religiosity, that "urban/rural, like literate/illiterate, like elite/popular, is a dichotomy ... which now encumbers rather than liberates our understanding of the past"(14-15).
