For minor medical problems, an old-fashioned remedy might be just what the doctor ordered. While some folk cures haven't stood the test of time (e.g., putting butter on a burn could make it worse), many are as good as their drugstore counterparts. "For the most part, treatments that didn't work got weeded out, so the ones that are still around tend to be effective," says Roberta Lee, M.D., of the Beth Israel Center for Health & Healing in New York City.
