Senate opponents of an asbestos settlement bill narrowly managed to block a vote on the Senate floor, although the legislation's supporters vow to bring it back before the session ends.
The bill would create a $140 billion trust fund to settle thousands of asbestos-related lawsuits. The Senate failed by two votes to override a filibuster on the legislation. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., switched his vote from "yes'' to "no'' in a procedural move that would allow him to bring the bill back for reconsideration. Another supporter, Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, was absent because his wife was ill.
