COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. _ Pumpkin is practically synonymous with October, when 80 percent of the pumpkins grown in the United States are harvested.
The heavy rains in the Midwest this summer will dampen the harvest and processing at Libby's pumpkin fields and plant in Morton, Ill., the ``Pumpkin Capital of the World.''
``Rain is not pumpkins' best friend,'' said plant manager Don Nodtvedt. ``We will have to work harder this year to remove the excess moisture so that the pumpkin meat meets our specifications.'' The heavy rains made the pumpkin meat thinner and more moisture-laden than usual.
