The governor of Maku, a town close to the Turkish border, told the Associated Press two demonstrators were killed on Feb. 17 during protests marking the 7th anniversary of the imprisonment in Turkey of Abdullah Ocalan, leader of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). The Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) and Komaleh are launching satellite TV stations which might attract US funding. The two parties, campaigning for Kurdish autonomy similar to that in Iraqi Kurdistan, are at the same time working for a broad coalition with other minorities in Iran. They want a federal system for the minorities somewhat in line with the one called for in Iraq's new constitution.
