The Aztec term for god, teotl, had several meanings. It could refer to a god, to the divine nature of a god, and to the concept of sacredness. As a result, understanding the nature of Aztec religion can be difficult. Texts written by people who met and lived among the Aztecs after the Spaniards took control have survived. They include descriptions of Aztec gods and of the rites performed in their honor. However, because few of the authors understood the true nature of the Aztec religion, most all simplified the Aztec concept of god to fit their own idea of religion.
