Physicians use various tools to reach a diagnosis: history, physical findings, blood tests, x-rays, and consults with specialists. I'll never forget the time I was helped by a very unusual consultant.

Ms. R had been admitted for profound weakness and pain in the extremities, but she complained mostly of "bowel problems." Although I tried hard to get Ms. R to tell me more about her weakness, she would return to her GI problems. Her big concern was food allergies that limited her diet to rice "boiled to the point of mush."
