George Washington may have operated his own whiskey distillery but the libation he really favored was Madeira.
A fortified wine, like port or sherry, Madeira was the chardonnay of the 18th century. It was drunk to toast the Declaration of Independence, or so the story goes.
Modern-day patriots need to reacquaint themselves with Madeira, a "noble beverage" that has suffered a little too much obscurity, according to Todd Hess, wine director of Sam's Wines & Spirits.
The wine comes from the Portuguese island of Madeira, which is located in the Atlantic Ocean 360 miles off the African coast.
