Hungary's population declines by 38,000 to 10.077 million in 2005

BUDAPEST. FEBRUARY 27. INTERFAX CENTRAL EUROPE - Hungary's population continued to decline in 2005 at the same rate as in the previous year, although the inflow of immigrants helped temper the decline to some extent, preliminary figures published Monday by Hungary's Central Statistical Office (KSH) reveal.

There were 97,500 live births and 135,500 deaths in Hungary last year, respective increases of 2.5% and 2.3% compared to 2004. This resulted in an overall drop of 38,000 or 0.4% in the population to an estimated 10.077 million by the end of the period, which compares to a 37,350 decline ...
