Feb. 26--During a recent Arabic-language class at Santa Fe Community College, a woman placed her head in her hands. "Omigosh," she said. "There's just so much to remember in here."

After three weeks, the students had learned only 12 letters and the meaning of fewer than 20 words.

For many English speakers, learning Arabic is no easy feat. There's the different alphabet to master as well as the awkward style of writing from right to left. The dozen students who regularly attend the Wednesday-night class say they spend hours studying.
