PHILADELPHIA _ A five-year study of the contributions of African Americans in baseball culminated on Monday with the election of 17 new members to the Hall of Fame, including the first woman.
The late Effa Manley, a Philadelphia native who died in 1981, was one of four former Negro league executives elected by a 12-person panel.
In addition, the panel elected seven former Negro league players, five pre-Negro league players, and one pre-Negro league executive.
