The stick didn't work, so on Monday the Colorado Supreme Court unveiled the carrot.
Law firms that commit to having their members perform 50 hours of free work for needy people each year will be publicly recognized by the state's highest court starting next year. The firms' names will appear annually on the court's Web site.
The program follows failed attempts in the late 1990s to require lawyers to perform free work or to report how much such work they perform each year.
