That question was put to ninth through 12th graders in schools on Virginia's Eastern Shore, in Northeast North Carolina and in Southside Hampton Roads.
The Virginian-Pilot invited students to participate in an essay contest for February's observance of Black History Month. Nearly 60 teenagers responded with opinions as diverse as the writers.
This is the first installment of three essays each Friday through March 17. On the final day, winners of gold ($250), silver ($150) and bronze ($100) awards will be named. Other honorees receive $25. Chesapeake Square provides the prizes.
