Until the invention of printing, and later of typewriters and computers, the only way people could communicate without talking to each other was through handwriting. As long as writing was legible, everyday messages and records could be written on any flat surface. More important messages, however, came to be written more carefully on expensive materials such as paper, cloth or parchment (specially prepared skin from sheep or goats).

The most valuable information and the most sacred teaching came to be written by talented artists in beautiful lettering. The name for lettering when used as a fine art is "calligraphy," and has a long and respected history. In some ...
