When Rodolfo Sorondo's 28-year-old law clerk left for a job at a firm, she made more money than he did as a district court judge.

"I do believe that the primary threat to judicial independence is the control of the purse strings. As long as the legislature controls the purse strings without any guidelines, the judiciary will always be under its thumb," said Sorondo, now the leader of appellate practice at Holland & Knight in Miami.

Sorondo joined four other current and former judges who shared their experiences and opinions on threats to the judiciary when The Florida Bar Committee on Judicial Independence met at the Midyear Meeting in Miami.
