Approximately 20% of all children have a chronic illness, and about one-third of that number experience consequences severe enough to interfere with school functioning and performance. This article describes challenges that schools face in their efforts to serve students with chronic illness and their families, and it suggests the role that professional school counselors can play in facilitating support.
