Actress S. Epatha Merkerson's role in Lackawanna Blues as Rachel "Nanny" Crosby, a nurturing woman who runs a boarding house for the down-and-out, landed her an award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a television movie or miniseries at the 12th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Merkerson was the only Black woman nominated in this category and beat out four other nominees. When she received her award, Merkerson cracked a few jokes and expressed gratitude to others, including her manager and the people who made it happen.

"Mostly I want to thank the Screen Actors Guild for making me a part of this community," she said.
