EU Foreign Ministers agreed on 27 February to provide 139 million for 2006 to Turkish Cyprus to help improve the economic situation in the northern part of the divided Mediterranean island. Ministers meeting in Brussels at their General Affairs and External Relations Council finally adopted without further debate a "Regulation establishing an instrument of financial support for encouraging the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community".
