Mar. 2--STOCKTON - Fifty-nine-year-old Berberian Nut Co. will be leaving Stockton after 16 years and moving to a new walnut-processing plant in Chico, near where most of its raw product is grown.
"Instead of shipping 80 percent of our nuts here from north of Sacramento, we'll ship just 20 percent there (to Chico)," company manager Rex Lewis said.
It costs $560 to truck a load of walnuts from Chico to Stockton based on the current high cost of diesel, Lewis said.
It also makes sense for the company's owners, since they own a considerable amount of land in Chico, while in Stockton they are leasing their site at 1503 ...
