This issue juxtaposes the chic with the scruffy and slightly menacing, within a single feature or from story to story. "Noir & Blanc," for instance, riffs on Nouvelle Vague cinema and the Paris student riots of '68, along with Che Guevara, a hero of the time. The clothes, however, are smartly shaped and playfully elegant, like many of those in Sixties films. Next comes "Liaisons Dangereuses," which suggests Andy Warhol Factory groupies out for the night at CBGB wearing, of all things, rather pretty dresses. The Eighties come back in "La Sauvage," with punked-out hair, fierce makeup, tighter-than-tight pants and microminis. Then, in "La Plage," we revisit the sophisticated ...
