BOC falls to Linde of Germany for [pounds sterling]8.2bn.

INDUSTRIAL gases giant BOC today accepted an [pounds sterling]8.2 billion takeover bid from German rival Linde with the added sweetener of a promise that its [pounds sterling]450 million pension deficit will be wiped out within three years.

The deal comes five years after American antitrust regulators blocked a [pounds sterling]7.2 billion joint offer from France's Air Liquide and Air Products of the US and 18 months after Linde first looked at a BOC bid.

BOC becomes the latest in a string of British companies to be taken over by foreign bidders although this is the first major foreign takeover by a German company for four years.
