Unlike first-ring suburbs that stopped growing decades ago, the southern metro-area community of Prior Lake continues to explode. The population is expected to grow from 21,000 now to 35,000 by 2020.

Much of that growth has been driven by completion of the Bloomington Ferry Bridge over the Minnesota River on Hwy. 169 in the mid-1990s. The new bridge increased accessibility to southern communities, leading to a building boom Savage, Shakopee and much of Scott County as farmland was turned into sprawling housing developments.
