New Orleans Cold Storage (NOCS) lost 52 million pounds of chicken to Hurricane Katrina. But that may be not be the worst: the refrigerated warehouse operator, which exports chicken to Russia, South America and Africa, may lose its outlet to the sea.
There's mounting pressure now to close the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MRGO), a 76-mile channel through St. Bernard Parish that has been blamed for aggravating hurricane damage to the parish and to New Orleans itself by providing a path for a 25-foot storm surge that overwhelmed levees.
