It's amazing, in a way, how Dick Cheney has morphed from being widely acknowledged as a knowledgeable, valuable power-behind-the-throne kind of vice president into a palpable, unquestionable problem, a dark, Darth Vader-ish political caricature. Where George W. Bush was inexperienced in matters of defense and foreign policy, Cheney was the balance. Whereas Bush knew little of how Washington worked, Cheney was an old hand at capital intrigue. After 9/11, Cheney was at the president's side every step of the way, and that was fine, even comforting. As a former secretary of defense, he knew what he was doing. We were sure of it.
