Mar. 4--At a small storefront mosque in a barren stretch of Monroe Street, a group of mostly African-American Muslims gathers for daily prayers. Quietly and reverently, four men enter for a Wednesday afternoon service. They take off their shoes, approach the wall facing East toward Mecca, then kneel and bow on the cold blue carpet.
