Mar. 5--OTTAWA, Ohio - There is no Putnam County spelling bee - unless you happen to be in New York City.
The hit Broadway musical with the unassuming name, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, has been wooing audiences for nearly a year, but the same event in Putnam County, Ohio, had its last curtain call seven years ago.
Putnam County sent two spelling champs to the national spelling bee in the 1980s, but by 1998, the elementary school principals from the county's nine local school districts agreed their schools were spending too much time drilling youngsters on spelling.
