AMSTERDAM - Like Einstein, Rembrandt is a one-name synonym for genius. But unlike our love affair with the affable, unkempt professor, most Americans don't quite understand just why Rembrandt van Rijn is considered the world's greatest artist.
Maybe the anxiety of Vincent van Gogh, the sexual voracity of Pablo Picasso or the antics of Salvador Dali seem more in tune with modern attitudes about artistic genius than Rembrandt's dark portraits of dour folks in vaguely Pilgrim attire.
