One child in particular sticks in Arturo Zamudio's mind.
His name was Pedro, and he was a student at the Streamwood elementary school where Zamudio was working as a teacher aide in the late 1980s.
Pedro was a "good kid" who would sometimes play at Zamudio's house, but Zamudio didn't want to get too close.
"I was always afraid to get involved," he said.
Then, in the early 1990s, Pedro was gunned down by gang members.
