Mar. 9--In its glory days, the Tavern Club had an outdoor ice rink on its 26th-floor terrace.
One regular, a professional violinist with a $1.5 million Stradivarius, liked to don disguises and play for pennies on the street below.
Then there was the skit night in 1930 when a woodland nymph, with only a palm branch to shield her, was chased around the premises by a prominent local architect. She escaped. He went on to become president of the club.
And, of course, several of its members, notably Elizabeth and Walter Paepcke, invented the modern-day ski resort and cultural center of Aspen.
