WILDLIFE experts are calling for calm as people worried about avian flu destroy nests, release pet birds into the wild and abandon others at sanctuaries.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds fears vigilantes may now take the law into their own hands - and organise their own culls of wild birds.
RSPB spokesman Andrei Farrar said: "Killing wild birds does nothing to help prevent the spread of bird flu.
