Mar. 12--Cummings High's problems are outside the classroom. More than a week after a judge threatened to close Cummings High School, Burlington is still waiting to see what happens next. Wake County Superior Court Judge Howard Manning Jr.
announced recently that Cummings is among 19 schools statewide he is prepared to close if academic achievement levels don't improve soon.
"Superintendents and principals have run out of room and run out of time," Manning said in a 17-page letter to state Superintendent June Atkinson and State Board of Education Chairman Howard Lee. "The state is clearly and ultimately legally responsible." That said, we'd like ...
