Unable to solve an aggressive Troy Catholic defense down the stretch, Section III Class AA girls basketball champion Rome Free Academy dropped a hard-fought 47-44 state quarterfinal game to the Crusaders at Hudson Valley Community College on Saturday. With the loss, coach Karen Gaesser's Black Knights finished a best-ever 20-4.
RFA was ahead 40-37 starting the last quarter, but couldn't solve the swarming defensive press applied by the Crusaders (22-2) in that quarter. Troy Catholic outscored RFA 10-4 over the closing eight minutes of action.
"It was a very physical game, and their defense was hard to penetrate ...
