NEW YORK -- Paper towels are a mainstay business for mass retailers, generating annual sales of about $2.18 billion, according to Information Resources Inc. (IRI).

Consumers may not always give much thought to the products they use for routine cleaning tasks around their homes, but suppliers take the category very seriously. Procter & Gamble Co. (P&G), whose Bounty brand accounts for an estimated 40% of category sales, recently filed suit against McClane Co., alleging that the private label supplier copied Bounty's packaging for its Towels line.
