Google's December 2004 announcement to expand its plans to digitize the world's books into scanning collections from five major world libraries in the U.S. and U.K. brought a strong reaction from Europe, primarily from France. Jean-Noel Jeanneney, president of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, wrote in Le Monde ("Google defies Europe," Jan. 22, 2005) of a risk of "crushing American domination" of the "idea of the world to be held by future generations."
