A diet rich in antioxidants, particularly vitamin E and zinc, may delay the development of age-related macular degeneration, reported Dr. Redmer van Leeuwen of Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam, and associates.
Oxidative stress has been implicated as a cause of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), as it has in other age-related disorders. But studies assessing a possible link between AMD and dietary intake of antioxidants have yielded conflicting results, the investigators said (JAMA 2005;294:3101-7).
