For years, Weight Watchers and similar organizations have urged clients--usually women--to lose weight so that they look better. As Rosemarie Robotham, senior editor-at-large at ESSENCE, explains in her article, "Diary of My Weight Loss: One Woman's Journey From a Lifetime of Poor Eating and Exercise Habits to a Healthier, Fitter Body": "... losing weight had always seemed, to my mind, something I needed to do to be acceptable to others.... Only lately as I admit my desire for a long and vital life with my husband and two children and my future grandchildren have I begun to understand that losing weight is, foremost, about attaining a better quality of life."
