Of 40 men hospitalized with a heart attack, 20 were randomly assigned to cardiac education and 20 to stress management training. The education group had one individual session, followed by eight sessions of didactic teaching about coronary artery disease, health habits, and stress. The sessions were held in groups of two to six patients. The stress management subjects underwent four sessions of instruction and practice in Progressive Relaxation, learning about handling stress and emphasizing home relaxation practice.
