Ninety-four male patients, ages 36-74, with established coronary artery disease and evidence of ambulatory or mental stress-induced myocardial ischemia were randomly assigned to 16 weeks of aerobic exercise three times a week or to a 1.5-hour weekly class on stress management or to a routine treatment control group. Stress management was associated with a significant reduction in clinical coronary artery disease events vs. routine care at years 1 and 5 (p=0.02, 0.037, respectively). A 17% advantage over the exercise group was not significant. Estimated five-year costs in the stress management and routine groups were $9 and $16 million, respectively.
