Mar. 14--The pending sale of Knight Ridder Inc. to the McClatchy Co. brings little clarity to the fate of the Duluth News Tribune and other Northland community newspapers owned by the nation's second-largest newspaper publisher.
McClatchy announced Monday it will turn around and sell the Duluth-based newspaper group along with 11 other properties, including the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
McClatchy said most of the newspapers it's peddling don't fit its model of serving high-growth communities. That's not to say the 12 properties won't be attractive to other chains.
