Mar. 14--Employees of the Akron Beacon Journal woke Monday to news that their parent, Knight Ridder Inc., was going to be sold to a well-respected rival.

Within hours, though, employees learned that the Beacon Journal's future was undecided -- beyond the fact that the newspaper would continue to publish.

Knight Ridder will be sold to McClatchy Co., which quickly announced it will sell 12 of the 32 Knight Ridder daily newspapers, including the Beacon Journal.
